Kort beskrivning

Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is the biggest cereal crop in Sweden with a total production of 1.9 million tonnes per year or 38% of the total cereal production. Septoria tritici blotch (STB) is a major limiting factor for wheat production affecting both quality and yield. Incorporating genetic resistance in the new varieties is the most sustainable strategy for controlling STB because it will reduce the fungicide use thereby benefiting both the economy and the environment. Thus, the main goals of the proposed project are to: a) Study the genetic diversity found in the STB isolates in different regions of Sweden b) Study to what extent Swedish wheat varieties differ in resistance to the local isolates c) Identify varieties most suitable for various regions based on their resistance to local isolates. The project will utilize the ongoing variety trials organized by various organizations and listed on skåneforsoken.nu. The knowledge gained in this project will improve our understanding of the genetic diversity of the Swedish STB isolates and the wheat varieties. This will have huge benefits both in the short and the long term.
